Our Fear of Uncertainty

For those of us who struggle with the unknown, there is a layer that exists under our need for certainty, and that layer is fear. These fears assume many forms, such as that our endeavors will result in misfortune, that we will never be able to accomplish our goals, or that we will be unable to find a way out of our predicaments.  But our fear of the future is merely a creation of our own minds. It is dialogue or a story we tell ourselves limiting all that can possibly be in the future.

So how can we change this inner dialogue to alleviate our fears of uncertainty and enable us to pursue our life goals or dreams?  We can start by asking a very simple question. We can choose to ask ourselves in these moments, is this particular fear about the future absolute? Do I know for sure that the things I fear will work out as negatively as I am projecting?  Most often, that answer is a resounding “No.”  So, if our fears are neither definitive nor absolute, what else can exist in our experience of uncertainty?  The space in uncertainty that is not filled by our fears falls within the realm of Maybe.

Maybe is the part of uncertainty where endless possibilities always exist. It is the light in any darkened room calling us to find another way to resolve a problem.   It is the acknowledgment that life has more than one lane.  Within the many possibilities, maybe the situation you are facing will work out well or maybe the answer will come to you or maybe you will be all right no matter what happens. The essence of “Maybe” or “what may be” contains the hope within uncertainty.

Lets try it!  Now think about a current situation, one that is causing you stress and worry. Are these fears about this situation absolute?  Can you know for certain how things will turn out?  If you are not certain, try to acknowledge that other possibilities may exist. Close your eyes and take a few breaths focusing on the word Maybe.  How does that feel?  If you are similar to me, Maybe will help you see that you are not stuck in any situation and that there is hope that your life will keep unfolding every moment offering you new opportunities.  Even if you can’t see those new opportunities in the moment, Maybe will help you stay strong and open to all that can be.

Keep your attention on Maybe the next few days and see what happens to your fears and worries.

Maybe youll be pleasantly surprised.
